Under the NFPA provisions most jurisdictions adopt, a required fire alarm out of service for more than 4 hours in a 24-hour period, or a sprinkler system impaired for more than 10 hours in 24, means the fire department must be notified and the building either evacuated or placed under an approved fire watch. Hot work (welding, cutting, grinding, torch roofing) requires a dedicated watch under OSHA 1910.252 whenever combustibles sit within 35 feet, continuing at least 30 minutes after the work stops — many jurisdictions now require 60. Your fire marshal has the final word: if they’ve told you to post a watch, the clock is already running.
